An Intro to Dental Crowns

When teeth lose their structure, a crown or cap can be placed over top to give a more attractive appearance. There are three different types of crowns which are used in different situations:

  • Full porcelain
  • Porcelain fused to metal
  • Full metal

If you need a crown, your dentist will explain the differences between all of the options and help you decide what is right for you. Once that is decided, this basic procedure is followed to correctly prepare your crowns:

  1. Impressions of the tooth or teeth to be crowned are taken in the office and then sent off to the lab to be prepared.
  2. A temporary crown is placed over the tooth or teeth.
  3. The final product arrives at the office. There is a system of checks and balances to make sure everything is correct then your crowns are cemented over your natural teeth.
